The purpose of this study was to examine whether the cultural self-construal would affect online and offline self-disclosure and further online and offline self-disclosure would affect the sense of community and happiness. A total of 1051 adults participated in this study and the questionnaires were administered individually. The structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to test the fitness of the study model compared to the alternative model. Results indicated that horizontal collectivism was positively related to online and offline self-disclosure respectively. And it predicted the sense of community via offline self-disclosure and also predicted happiness directly and indirectly. On the other hand, vertical collectivism was negatively related to offline self-disclosure while it had no significant impact on online self-disclosure and the sense of community. It was related to happiness directly. Horizontal collectivism predicted the sense of community positively. Meanwhile, online self-disclosure had no significant relationship with the sense of community and happiness. Findings suggested that the online interpersonal relationships should be integrated with the offline relationships in order to have impacts on the sense of community and happiness. In future research consideration of the cultural context may be necessary to fully understand the function and process of online interpersonal relationships. |
